Kapwa Theatre Company
Kapwa Theatre Company is dedicated to creating powerful and thought-provoking theatrical experiences that resonate with diverse audiences. We exist to create high-quality, inclusive, and accessible theater that engages and inspires our community. Our company is committed to producing high-quality productions that entertain, challenge, and enrich the lives of our patrons. You can learn more about our three guiding pillars below.

High-Quality
-
Craftsmanship: We value well-crafted theatre that honors the artform, and are committed to being intentional with every step of the process, from conceptualization to closing night. We keep authentic storytelling at the center of every production.
-
Professionalism: We are committed to being prepared, staying accountable, and centering all conversations around the values of kindness and respect. Maintaining a professional environment is the foundation of a fulfilling experience.
-
Exploration: Theater is an explorative experience for everyone involved. We committed to centering our craft around exploration and curiosity. From direction to execution, we strive to discover and showcase new perspectives

Inclusive
-
Race: We are committed to uplifting racially marginalized voices by proactively casting Actors of Color, considering actors of every race and ethnicity for every role possible (where race or ethnicity is not integral to the character), and not allowing our casting to be limited by traditional casting norms.
-
Gender & Sexuality: We are committed to exploring opportunities for actors and stories to go outside of cisgendered and heteronormative patterns. We proactively seek opportunities to amplify experiences from the LGBTQ+ community, consider actors of every gender expression and sexual orientation for every role when possible (where gender & sexuality are not integral to the character), and consider where roles traditionally played by men could be portrayed by women.
-
Body Inclusivity: Slim or plus-size, tall or short, able-bodied or differently-abled: we are committed to breaking the boundaries of the bodies that are traditionally considered for every role (where body-type is not integral to the character).

Accessible
-
Financially: Theatre should not be a form of luxury entertainment. It’s for everyone, regardless of financial ability. We do everything in our power to prevent financial barriers from making theatre inaccessible.
-
All-Abilities: Theatre should be accessible for all, both on and off stage. We commit to having performance and amenity options available for people of all physical and mental abilities.
-
Safety: We are committed to creating an environment that is safe for artists and patrons. Harassment and abuse of any kind is not tolerated in our community.

What is Kapwa?
Kapwa is a Tagalog word that loosely translates to "shared identity" or "togetherness", but Kapwa isn’t just empathy; it’s the belief that your well-being is tied to mine — that my joy, my struggle, my healing is bound to yours.
